Reading a Shaft Profile From Butt to Tip

A flex letter compresses an entire stiffness curve down to one character. Almost everything useful is in what gets discarded.

Ask two players what shaft they use and you will get two model names and two letters. Ask what those shafts actually do differently and the conversation usually stops, because the label has already thrown away the information that would answer the question.

A golf shaft is not uniformly stiff. It has a stiffness distribution along its length, and that distribution is what determines how the club behaves when you load it and release it. Two shafts can have identical weight, identical torque and identical flex letters, and still produce different ball flights for the same player, because the stiffness sits in different places.

How the Reading Is Actually Taken

The tool is a frequency analyser: a clamp, a weight, and a counter. In normal use the club is clamped at the butt and the head oscillates freely, giving you one number for the whole assembled club. That is butt frequency, and it is useful, but it is a single value describing an entire curve.

Profiling is what happens when you take that measurement repeatedly at different clamp positions along the same bare shaft. Clamp at the butt and read. Move the clamp several inches toward the tip and read again. Repeat down the length. What you end up with is a series of numbers describing how stiffness is distributed, rather than a single summary figure.

The part nobody mentions: profiling numbers are only comparable within one bench. Clamp geometry, tip weight and clamp length all shift the absolute values. What matters is that every shaft on a given bench is read the same way, so the comparison between them is honest.

Plot those readings and you get a curve. That curve is the shaft's real identity. The flex letter is a marketing summary of it, and different manufacturers summarise differently, which is why an S from one brand can measure softer than an R from another.

What Each Section of the Curve Does

Roughly speaking, the shaft divides into three regions, and each behaves differently in a golf swing.

The butt section

The part in your hands and just below. Its stiffness has more to do with perceived feel and with how the club behaves through transition than with launch conditions. A softer butt section tends to make a club feel more active and can make a fast transition feel loose. A firmer butt section feels more stable at the top of the swing but can read as harsh to a smooth-tempo player.

The mid section

The largest region and the most frequently ignored. Mid-section stiffness influences how the shaft stores and returns energy through the downswing, and it is where a lot of the difference between two shafts with similar tip and butt readings actually lives. A firmer mid section usually steadies a strong transition. A softer one adds a sense of load that some players need in order to time the release.

The tip section

The last several inches before the hosel, and the region with the most direct effect on ball flight. A softer tip lets the head lag and then release later, adding dynamic loft and generally raising both launch and spin. A firmer tip resists that, holding flight down and taking spin off. This is the region tip trimming operates on, which is why trimming changes ball flight so dramatically.

Weight tells you how the club will feel to swing. The profile curve tells you what the ball will do. You need both, and only one of them is printed on the shaft.

Reading a Curve in Practice

Once you have curves for several shafts read on the same bench, comparison becomes straightforward. Two shafts that track together across the whole length will behave similarly. Two that separate in the tip readings while matching at the butt will feel comparable in the hands and produce noticeably different flights.

That second case is the useful one, and it comes up constantly. A player who says a shaft "feels right but launches too high" is almost always describing a butt and mid section that suit them attached to a tip section that does not. The fix is a shaft with a similar butt reading and a firmer tip, not a stiffer flex across the board — which is what a flex-letter conversation would have produced.

What Profiling Cannot Tell You

It cannot tell you how a shaft will feel to you specifically, and it cannot predict how a particular player will time a particular profile. Two players with identical clubhead speeds can want opposite tip sections, because one loads the shaft early and hard while the other applies force late and gradually.

Profiling narrows the field from hundreds of options to a handful worth putting in your hands. It does not replace putting them in your hands. Anybody selling a fitting that is purely a spreadsheet exercise is selling you the first half of the job.

Why We Read Everything

Every shaft that goes into a build here is read before it is cut, including shafts pulled out of clubs players bring in. It takes a few minutes and it catches two things regularly: shafts that sit well away from where their label suggests, and shafts that turn out to be perfectly good, which saves the player from replacing something that was never the problem.

The readings go on your spec sheet as numbers. Numbers survive. Letters do not.
