Reading a Shaft Profile From Butt to Tip A single flex letter compresses an entire stiffness curve into one character and throws away everything useful about it. Three Subjects, Repeatedly

Profiling, trimming and frequency come up in almost every session because they are the three places where a build either succeeds or quietly fails. Head selection gets all the attention and almost none of the outcome.

These notes exist so you can follow the conversation in the bay rather than nodding along while somebody uses vocabulary at you. None of it is proprietary and none of it is secret — it is simply not written down anywhere a golfer would normally look.

  • Profiling is how you find out what a shaft actually does, as opposed to what the label claims
  • Trimming is where a builder either follows the chart for that exact model or guesses and ruins the profile
  • Frequency is the number that proves the first two were done properly, on the finished club rather than in theory
