What Actually Happens Between Hello and the Spec Sheet

No mystery, no theatre, no salesman hovering. A session here is a sequence of measurements with a conversation running alongside it. Here is the whole thing, stage by stage.

The Intake Call

Before you book, we ask three things on the phone: what club is bothering you, what it does wrong, and what you were hoping it would do instead. That five-minute conversation decides which bay you need and occasionally saves you the trip entirely — more than a few callers get told their problem is a worn grip and a bent lie, which is a bench job, not a fitting.

Profiling What You Brought

Your clubs go straight onto the bench when you arrive. We read playing length with the club soled at its own lie, check lie and loft on the gauge, weigh the head, take swing weight on the fourteen-inch fulcrum, and clamp each club for a butt frequency reading. If the grips are worn, we note that too, because a slick grip changes how hard you hold on and therefore how the shaft loads.

This stage is where a surprising number of sessions get resolved. Sets that were never checked after purchase routinely show frequency scatter of ten cycles or more between neighbouring irons, and lie angles that drifted two degrees from a season of range mats.

Your Baseline, On the Monitor

You warm up properly — there is no rush and no clock running against you — and then you hit your own club until we have a stable set of numbers. Ball speed, launch, spin, descent angle, carry and dispersion. Not the best three shots. All of them, including the ones you would rather we deleted, because the misses are the data that matters.

Everything that follows gets compared against this baseline. If a change does not beat it, we say so and move on.

Bay time · 10–15 minutes

Length and Lie Before Anything Else

These two get sorted first because they change everything downstream. Half an inch of length moves your swing weight, your frequency reading and your strike pattern all at once. Lie angle decides where the face points at impact more directly than most players believe.

We work these with adjustable-length trial clubs and impact tape on the sole, not by eyeballing your address position. If the answer is that your current length is already right, that is a perfectly good outcome and we will say it plainly.

Bay time · 15–20 minutes

Shaft Profile, Then Head, Then Weight

Shafts come next, and we work by profile band rather than by brand. Weight first, then how the stiffness is distributed along the shaft, then torque if it is still relevant after the first two. Only once the shaft is settled do we look at head models, and only after that do we play with tip weighting or grip build-up to land the swing weight.

Doing it in this order takes longer than shotgunning combinations. It is also the only way you can leave knowing why the winning club won.

Bay time · 30–60 minutes

Filling In the Spec Sheet

The sheet gets written at the bench while you are standing there, not emailed later from a template. Raw shaft length, tip trim in eighths, target butt frequency, playing length, swing weight, loft and lie, grip model and wrap count. You get the original; we keep a copy on file under your name.

End of session · 10 minutes

The Build, and the Check After It

Assembly happens here on Battleground Avenue. Shafts are cut to the plan, prepped, epoxied and left vertical overnight to cure. The next morning every club is clamped and read again. If the finished frequency does not land inside two cycles of the target, the club goes back on the bench before it goes into a bag.

The Follow-Up

Roughly a month after collection we call. Not to sell you the next thing — to find out whether the numbers held up outside. If something is off, the first adjustment visit is free and you get it for as long as you own the club.

Practical Notes

Turning Up Prepared

None of this is compulsory, but every one of these makes your session data cleaner and therefore your build better.

  • Bring the clubs in question, even if you plan to replace them — they are the baseline
  • Wear the shoes you play in; spikes change your ground contact and your delivery
  • Do not take a lesson the same week if you can avoid it — a swing mid-change is a moving target
  • Skip the session if you are hurt or exhausted; we will move the booking, no charge
  • Have a rough idea of your typical scores and where the shots leak away
Honest Answer Policy

Sessions That End in "Do Nothing"

Somewhere around one session in six ends with us recommending no purchase at all. Sometimes the club is already correct and the problem is a strike pattern that a coach should handle. Sometimes a lie bend and fresh grips do the entire job.

We charge the fitting fee for those sessions the same as any other, because the measuring work was done either way. What we do not do is invent a recommendation to justify the appointment.

Two Hours Now Beats Two Seasons of Guessing

Bring the club that frustrates you most. We will find out whether the problem is the club, the spec, or something a bend and a re-grip can fix for far less than you expected.
