An iron set is not eight separate clubs. It is one continuous curve, and if the curve has a kink in it somewhere around the 7 iron, no amount of practice will make those yardages behave.
Yardage Gaps Are Usually a Build Problem
Players arrive convinced they have a technique problem with one particular iron. Occasionally that is true. Far more often, that iron is sitting several cycles per minute off the line the rest of the set is following, or its lie angle drifted a degree and a half, or its shaft was installed a quarter inch long by a shop working from a chart rather than a measurement.
The first twenty minutes of an iron session settles this argument with numbers. Every club gets clamped, read, gauged and weighed, and the readings get plotted. A healthy set produces a straight climb from the long irons to the short ones. A set with a problem shows you exactly where the problem lives.
Lie Angle Does More Than You Think
Face angle at impact is what starts the ball, and lie angle influences face angle every time the sole is not perfectly level at the strike. Two degrees upright on a mid iron will move the start line meaningfully left for a right-handed player. It is also entirely invisible without a gauge and a lie board.
We check dynamic lie with tape on the sole and a board underneath, on a strike-by-strike basis rather than from a static address position. Static lie fitting produces the right answer by accident about half the time.
Shafts: Weight Band, Then Profile
Iron shafts get chosen by weight band first, since that decides tempo and the amount of work your hands are doing to control the head. Only then do we look at how the stiffness is distributed. Two shafts with the same weight and the same flex letter can behave completely differently depending on where the soft section sits, which is exactly why the letter is not enough information.

What the Straight Line Means
Across a properly built set, butt frequency should climb by a consistent step from the longest iron to the shortest. The size of that step is a fitting decision — a smaller step suits players who want the short irons to feel lively, a larger one suits players who want them stable.
What is not a decision is whether the line is straight. If it wanders, the set gaps unpredictably no matter how good the strike is.
A Set Before and After the Bench
Readings from a set that came in last spring. Nothing was wrong with the heads or the shafts — they were simply never checked after assembly. The rebuild involved re-cutting three shafts and re-weighting two heads.

Iron Questions We Get Weekly
Can you rebuild my existing irons instead of selling me new ones?
Yes, and it is a large part of what this bay does. Pulling, re-cutting and re-installing shafts on heads you already like is usually the cheapest route to a set that gaps properly. The heads are rarely the thing that is wrong.
Do I have to replace the whole set at once?
No. Splitting a set is common — longer irons in one profile, scoring irons in another. What matters is that the frequency line stays continuous across the join, which is a build detail rather than a purchasing one.
Are graphite iron shafts worth considering?
For a lot of players, yes, and the modern ones are nothing like the vague noodles that gave graphite irons a bad name years ago. They get profiled and frequency checked here exactly the same way steel does.
How often should lie angles be rechecked?
Once a season for anyone practising regularly off mats, and immediately after any incident involving a tree root. Forged heads move more readily than cast ones, which is a feature when you want them bent and a nuisance when you do not.
